Memories of one boys' experiences of his teachers
It is essential to remember how much societies ideas have changed on the role of discipline in schools.  In the forties, fifties and sixties any teacher could administer corporeal punishment.  In later years, punishment in most school became restricted to the head and senior teachers.  In the second millennia, physical punishment is 'verboten' - touching a child is considered an 'assault'  in law.

Although David Wilson only lives about 2 mins walk away I seldom see him so you might pass this snippet on to him, but I think I can shed light on the reason for Terry Goodman's 'Killer' nickname. Our class (1966-72-ish) heard that he was coming 'next term' and (true or not, I don't know) that he had broken a pupil's arm at his previous school (Weavers' Road?). I'm not sure whether the nickname came with him because of an actual incident or whether we adopted it on the strength of the 'story', but he was 'Killer' to us before he arrived at WGS!!   Keith Cheasman

*   Didn't realise that Peter Eric Howes was Twanker's little brother. but I'm pretty sure that Twanker and I started

together  (Sep 1944) in IIa2 with Danny Burrell.  I think the original Twanker was the "buffer" off the front of a desk

wielded with a powerful fore-hand by Mr Wintersgill.   Jim TOMPKINS (1944)
