Worked in administration for a couple of decades after school, though involved throughout that period in volunteer work with children and sport. Eventually joined the world of professional football, forming the Football in the Community section at Colchester United. After some years this outgrew the football club and was turned into a separate charity, Sporting Chances, with its own purpose built centre.

For the last 5 years Director of the Friends of Moorfields Eye Hospital in London.
