Rotarian Bernard Beadle (passed away December 10th 2008)

Bernard Beadle joined the Rotary Club of Kenilworth in 1976 when he was Headmaster of Clinton School Kenilworth. Always jolly and cheerful, Bernard busied himself in a full life with his wife Jean, who was his school secretary. On his retirement from school teaching, he left Rotary to enjoy his many other activities, rejoining in 2000 when he was widowed.
Bernard served as secretary for the club in 2001-2, 2003-8, and as President in 2002-3, taking over the job of Programme Secretary in 2007-8. As President, in his valedictory address he professed himself to be 'elderly and idle'. However, everyone who knew him recognised his true worth. He operated as secretary and general factotum of a wide range of clubs and societies, from the Leamington Burma Star Association to the Kenilworth Talking News. He loved his Gilbert & Sullivan and as with `Pooh-Bah in the Mikado, he was seen as an energetic ‘Lord High Everything Else’, taking on any job and seeing it through. If he wasn’t secretary to the club, he was secretary to the club service committee, purveyor of the soup at the Rotary stand at the Kenilworth Lights Ceremony, forever gently oiling the wheels of the club by carrying on tasks that others may have been unaware.
He will be sadly missed, but warmly remembered, for his true dedication to ‘Service above Self’.
