4. The Logan Families before 1908:
Home Page Family History 28 March 2007
Less information is available on the Logan and Muse families than on the families associated with the Vaughan line. The non-census and St Catherine’s index evidence below is based on information supplied by Derek Pickup. The SCI (St. Catherine's Index) confirms that Elizabeth Muse married John Logan in 1880 (Q1 - 10b 673) and was born in 1861.

Identification of John Logan (III), Sarah Logan’s father’s, family tree is confirmed by information on Sarah’s birth, on John Logan (III) & Elizabeth Muse’s marriage, and Joseph Logan’s death certificates. The Logan’s came from Carrickfergus, Antrim, Ireland. Carrickfergus (Carraig Fhearghasa) or Rock of Feargus is on the mouth of an estuary, 7 miles NNE of Belfast, Northern Ireland and is the site of a castle.
The first Logan, John (I. c.1811) must have travelled from CarrickFergus Ireland with his wife Mary, between 1844 and 1849, to avoid the potato famine and to find work as a coal miner. In the 1851 census his two eldest sons Joseph and John (II) have joined him as coalminers (David is just 13 years old). They and their brothers John and Marriott were born in Ireland. Since Mary was born at Workington, identification of her and John’s mother comes from Mary’s birth certificate overleaf. Joseph Logan (c1835) is John Logan’s (III) father.

The Logan family are missing in the 1861 census, this may be because Flimby wasn’t checked (Studied, census Year: 1861 Parish: Crosscanonby Town: Maryport Film: Red 6359).
In the 1871 census two Logan families with sons named John were found. The first family below fits subsequent marriage certificate information:

The second John, aged 9, could be a relative, his father, also named John, is possibly Joseph’s brother - the 2 year age difference could well be an artefact.

The final proof that the first John is Sarah Logan’s father is demonstrated by the copy of John and Elizabeth’s (née Muse) marriage certificate given below, which names John’s father as Joseph. One of the witnesses is Elizabeth’s brother Thomas.

Comment: David’s age strongly suggests that he is Joseph’s younger brother.
Shortly after the 1881 census John Logan and his family moved to Durham for a maximum of 5 years. Whilst there, Joseph and Robert were born. The family returned, to Maryport before the 4th February 1886 when Sarah (Thomas and Louie Vaughan’s mother) was born:

John Logan (III) died in 1918 aged 58. His widow Elizabeth survived just one year dying aged just 57 in 1919. Joseph Logan (Sarah Logan’s grandfather) died aged 87 in 1919
Although Robert Muse and Mary Hodgson were both born in Maryport, I didn’t find Robert in the 1841 census. Even more annoying, no Robert Muse is registered as marrying between 1841 and 1853 inclusive - yet, their first son, Thomas, was born in 1850: Did Robert and Mary bother with a marriage ceremony?

Sadly their eldest son Thomas must have died because , in 1861, Thomas is only 3 years old. In 1861 the couple had three surviving children. Robert continues to work as an iron moulder.

On January 26th 1880 Elizabeth (Thomas and Louie Vaughan’s grandmother), aged 19, married John Logan. On the certificate she, like her mother before and the second witness, made her mark with a cross. Both her husband and her brother signed their names.
I failed to find the family in 1881 and none are listed in the Census index. However in 1891 a widowed Mary Muse, living in Nelson Street and born @ Maryport, is listed with her daughter Martha. If this is Robert Muse’s wife, then Robert is now dead and they must have lost their first daughter named Martha.
