Jonathan and Grace Ball (James Ball’s wife) are Bessie’s father’s cousins. Grace’s husband, James, is second cousin to all three. George Ball is James and Grace’s son. William Ball is this Jonathan’s eldest son; Bessie’s uncle, William Ball, died in childhood. The discovery of this Jonathan Ball confirmed that the Jonathan at Ballaminers was Jane’s Grandfather. N.B. A full family tree of the Ball’s is in the appendix.

Jonathan and his two sons (Richard and William) now have separate households @ St.Issey. The two grandsons living with Jonathan are thought to be Jonathan’s, second son John’s children, but as yet the parents have not been identified - a search at Gwennafe might find them.

In the 1851 census overleaf, Grace is Bessie Ball’s first cousin once removed. I think, though place of birth problematical, that James Ball (husband of Maria) is Grace’s son (IGI); this belief is supported by the 1881 census below. The younger James died aged 33 and was buried at L.Petherick on the 18th of February 1853 (the L.P. vicar spelled ‘Bears Down’ as ‘Baze Down’ - which spelling is correct, is unknown).

Grace’s husband, the elder James Ball, is himself a distant relative - the second cousin of both Grace and, Bessie’s father, John, a greatgrandson of Christopher Ball.

By the 1881 census Grace and her husband James Ball’s are believed to have died. Maria, the younger James’ wife, has moved to St.Issey and opened a shop and her son Christopher is a photographer. William Ball, brother in law to Maria, is Grace Ball’s son (i.e. Bessie Ball’s second cousin); surprisingly William was christened at both St.Eval and L.Petherick. One problem outstanding is the birth place, Maria and her children previously gave this as St.Ervan.
Henry Ball is Richard’s nephew, John Ball’s (son of Jonathan Ball and Nancy Vivian) son (see 1851 census).

In the 1851 census below, it is possible that Joseph is the brother of Grace Ball’s husband James. The limited evidence to support this is that James’s father is thought to be Joseph and a James and this Joseph were born at St.Columb Minor.

Further investigation might link this Samuel Ball to Edward and Phillippa Ball they had a son named Samuel, born in the same parish, circa 1850.

Knowledge of this Thomas is valuable because it helps to confirm which Thomas married Elizabeth Osborne and was, therefore, Bessie’s grandfather.
