I.    Introduction

Microsoft WORKS is an integrated package of software.   As  illustrated below,  it contains  three major elements a word-processor, a spreadsheet and a database.

The advantage of self-contained software is that they contain more facilities than  integrated packages and, in any absolute sense,  are clearly better.    However, integrated packages do have some advantages:

i) They are cheaper. WORKS  is cheaper than the individual word-processor, spreadsheet or database.
ii) The self contained software takes up considerably more space on a computer.
iii)

They are easier to use. For example, it is easier to pass data & graphs within WORKS   than between the    self contained packages - this statement is much less valid with Windows95 and Microsoft office suites.
iv)

The database in Microsoft WORKS   is much easier to use foir questionnaire analysis having both form and list views.

As far as quantitative research is concerned Microsoft WORKS can do as much as Microsoft OFFICE.

II.    Advantage of the WORKS spreadsheet over EXCEL:

The single major advantage of WORKS over EXCEL is that it allows columns and rows of data to be easily re-arranged.  Its advantage is therefore in entering data in a questionnaire, see Spreadsheet.  Once entered, the data can be analysed using WORKS, EXCEL or SPSS.  For EXCEL or SPSS, save the file as EXCEL version 2 or 4.

III.    Advantage of WORKS database over EXCEL:

The advantage of WORKS over EXCEL is that the data can be presented in two ways, see Database

IV.    Advantage of WORKS 3 database over SPSS:

The advantage of WORKS over ACCESS is that it is requires less training to use, see Database
