I. The First Year at Hull
II. The Second Year at Hull
III. The Third Year at Hull
IV. The Fourth Year at Hull
The photographs below were selected from a much larger number to show the lives we led, the fun we had, the friends we met and I hope memories that are worth recalling.
This page was set up rapidly so that I could refer to it in your Christmas letter, I would obviously appreciate any comments. It might well be worth splitting it up into several web pages to help those who do not have broadband.
If you want a copy of a photo or are a glutton for punishment and want a CD containing all the photographs I took, then let me know.
I was surprised, when I arrived at Hull to find that I was in digs with a physicist, with two more living next door. The reason, I subsequently discovered, was that both Martin and I were Congregationalists.

| Martin and I soon discovered that there was a different
culture in the North. After a few days Mrs Thacker, our landlady,
asked us in desperation "Aren't I giving you enough food?"
We were surprised and said that of course she was - what we hadn't
recognised was that according to her culture we should have left a
spoonful of food on the plate!
Life in the first year was hectic, we all joined clubs, Martin and I joined the Congregational Society - see later pictures of Bar-B-Que's in later years. Stefan and I went to the local swimming pool. We soon had other friends in our respective subjects, but we four stayed friends through out our time at university. Martin and John soon started travelling to university in the car. Stefan and I cycled. I cannot recall where the photograph on the right was taken, but it is evident the lads were strong enough to hold up a tottering wall!

Annoyingly, although we all obtained university accommodation in our second year, we didn't manage to stick together. As males we obviously didn't talk enough to each other. Stefan moved to Ferens, John and I had adjacent rooms at Needler Hall and Martin lived nearby and came in for meals.
| I was a year older than the other three and hence had my twenty-first birthday in our second year. My sister Rosemary came up and visited and suddenly I became very popular! As would any lad who had an attractive, tall, blonde sister. Photographs below: Left: John and Rosemary. Right: Rosemary, Me and martin. | ||

| The two photographs, above left, are of members of the Congregational society. The top photograph shows us crowded into my room at Needler. Rosemary is at the back left and Martin and John are sharing the bed with Liz and Beth. Stefan and John in the right hand photo seem to be having fun! | ||

| I've included the photo above, cos I like it, it was taken when the Hull and Leeds Cong-Socs met to have a B-B-Q | I must have said something humerous, cos Ann Maguire and another biologist are making threatening gestures. |
| Holidaying in Yarmouth with John and his parents
It was probably Easter when John invited us all to visit him in Yarmouth. But it was a great holiday. What I can't work out is how I managed to get the photograph on the left. The boat looks as if it was traveling at the highest speed Martin could drive it - yet I must have been blithely perching on the bow taking a picture!
On the Dodgem cars Martin was definitely aiming to smash into Stefan
and John's vehicle - yet what do they appear to be doing - simply having a
relaxed chat! |

The two photographs below were taken in rag week. The first is an
excellent official photograph with very identifiable friends. Joan was
lucky, Stefan, Sid and I decided not to eat her.

The second photograph shows just how windy were the conditions and the impact of the colour ful garb we were wearing. I suspect I wasn't the only one who had cold legs - perhaps Joan was lucky to be in the pot.

| The biologists amongst us suddenly seemed to have field
trips galore in the second year. Ant.Edmonds & David Atkinson facing. Chris Coulson behind ![]() But at least there were pleasant interludes: ![]() Right: Mike Griffin, Hazel Markem Chris Coulson on right |

The photograph on the right above and the montage of photographs below were all taken on the Zoological field trip at Scarborough. It was hard work but great fun. Sadly I had to leave early because of my grandmother's death.

| The third year began with a surprise - that rat
Martin had spent his summer on a trip to Greece without telling us.
Well, one thing the other three of us determined to do was take ourselves
at the end of the year. We began making plans - see later
photos. Meanwhile life went on.
Liz, who went to the teachers college next door to the university, is clearly enjoying herself. I presume she's holding a glass for a friend, but here was I brought up to think nice girls only drank halves! Stephenie and Barbara arrived, see photograph below, with Winnie, one of the two girls sharing their digs. Looking at the picture I'm not surprised neither Barbara's boyfriend Graeme nor I felt the need to chase other girls. |

As is evident from the photograph below, it was definitely
cold that year. Barbara and Stephenie are holding my umbrella - note
the University and Union scarves.
|
Fortunately, it is clear Spring eventually came and the
weather warmed up 'cos here are Stephenie and Stefan chattning on the
beach at the annual Cong-soc B.B.Q

Whilst the photograph below is not Stephenie's best it's one we both
always smile at. The event is Clemington Hall's Ball. We
hadn't registered, until we saw the photo, just how different Stephenie
and I were in size. I am on the step below Stephenie and yet am
still taller.![]() |
Squash was a game we all played at the University, though clearly games
between Stephenie and myself weren't practicable! In the photograph
below Barbara was playing with Stephenie, whilst I looked down from the
gallery and photographed Barbara preparing to serve.

frontage of the Co-operative store at Hull.
I've included the photograph below simply because it contains the charismatic
individual known to everyone at the university, simply by the embroidered
name on the sweater he wore: Eigenheit.
Eigenheit
studied pure and applied maths but only took the pure papers!!! He
didn't turn up for the others! The pure papers were so good (?) (they had
to go through numerous external markings) that they gave him a first class
even though he had only done half the papers!!!!! Chris

Stefan, John and I then started our trip to Greece. The picture on the left shows the start of the journey, whilst the photo on the right shows our visit to Meteora. The views were impressive, but without a car, it was a long walk. It was disappointing that we weren't able to visit the inside of any of the monasteries. Prince Charles, I believe, has been far more fortunate.

The montage below was again taken on Crete. Sadly the wind pumps have now been replaced, I have been told, by electrical ones.

I intend to change the photo of Stephenie and I at our wedding to one that includes our university friends.
![]() |
However, at least us lads are grouped together at John's
wedding:![]() |
The group photograph below is from Barbara and Graeme's wedding. Sadly, I haven't got copies of Martin & Henneke's and Stefan & Aga's wedding - help me boys! However, I do have a photograph, see below, copied from

Stefan which includes a picture of Henneke and of the first member of the next generation. In theory we had all grown up. Found jobs and started our new lives.
The good news is that 30+ years later we are all still alive, reasonably healthy and still wed - we have survived and enjoyed our children - though Stefan 's son Daniel still has many years to go before he leaves home.

I hope you enjoyed the above, let me know if it is worth me spending time putting the remainder of the photographs I took on the web.
