SPSS Files: can be split , using a single column of data, within the spreadsheet by selecting 'Data' and 'Split File'.  The groups created can either be compared or analysed separately.

WORKS and EXCEL files can only be split by:
    1.    Sorting the file, selecting all the data and sorting it in:
           EXCEL using 'Data' and 'Sort'
the WORKS spreadsheet using 'Tools' and 'Sort Rows'
the WORKS database using 'Tools' and 'Sort Records'
    2.    Copying the spreadsheet/database:
In later versions of EXCEL this is done by 'Edit' and 'Move or Copy Sheet' once for EACH new group.
In EXCEL and WORKS the sorted file needs to be saved several times once for EACH new group..
    3.     Deleting information in the new sheets/files to create a unique worksheet/database for EACH new group.
